A Day in the Life of a Special Education Teacher

This article is a great example of what a special education teacher deals with on a daily basis.  Whether you teach special education or general education we all work hard but it is helpful to be able to understand the point of view of your co-workers.  After having worked in the Early Childhood Program, which makes me a classroom teacher following a curriculum and includes the responsibilities of a special education teacher, meeting goals and objectives in the IEPs, I have had a healthy dose of both worlds.  I would much prefer to have the responsibilities of one or the other because both at the same time are very labor intensive.

  1. There is a lot of work involved for special education teachers. Not only do I have to prep for 5 classes, write IEPs, work on individual goals and objectives, communicate with general education teachers/parents/ancillery staff, but also have to help these same kids build on personal goals. Some of these include a wide range of social skills, fine motor kills, gross motor skills, and much more. I would never down play the responsibilities and roles of general education teachers, but only comment on my own experiences.
