Are the new graduation requirements hurting our special education students? I believe they are, however, at the same, we cannot lower our standards and we cannot make graduation requirements different depending on the strengths and weaknesses of every student. I am not sure how to remedy the situation but I feel terrible that special education students struggle socially and academically in high school to leave with a certificate of completion.
Below is an article that highlights the fallout of the new graduation requirements.
I have often struggled with this concept of what to do about special education students. I have a cousin who should have been in special education, but never received the help she needed. All of her teachers passed her on to the next level to get rid of her. She eventually graduated and has a beautiful diploma on her wall. It appears to be an accomplishment, but it is just a piece of paper. She can barely write her name.
